  25.         Donall O Baoill sent this answer to my questions about
  26. "sa + friochtán"   and "taobh amuigh" etc. :

  29. Standard Irish uses "sa fhrioctán".  There are, however, other dialectal
  30. forms which use eclipsis.  For example "sa bhfriochtán" etc.. is
  31. Connacht and Munster usage but they are not Standard written Irish.

  33. People are reluctant to lenite 'f' in many cases since it deletes the
  34. consonant and the hearer can be at times confused by this. Thus, you
  35. find "fónaill mé"  as the past of the verb without any change in
  36. every dialect.

  38. "Sa" with lenition or eclipsis in perfect Irish but the Standard has
  39. gone for lenition after ísa(n), do and de because there was no consensus
  40. about initial mutation after these three prepositions.

  42. With all other prepositions, Standard Irish allows both lenition and eclipsis.

  45. It is my opinion that you can not use "ar an taobh istigh/amuigh"
  46. to denote anything inside.  You just say "istigh i" or "istigh sa".
  47. Thus:

  49. "Tá sé ar an taobh amuigh den charr"   'it is on the outside of the carr'
  50. "Tá sé ar an taobh istigh den chupán" 'it is on the inner side of
  51.                                             the cup' (e.g. tea marks)
  52. "Bhí siad taobh istigh"    'they were inside'
  53. "Bhí siad istigh"          'they were inside'
  54.  
  55. "Cuir taobh istigh de do chuid éadaí é" 'Put it inside your clothes'
  56.                                            (something you want to hide)'
  57.  
  58. But you can't say:  "Cuir istigh i do chuid éadaí é"  unless you
  59. mean  'wrap it up in your clothes'.
